Jane Skafte

Jane Skafte's artistic journey consists of a passion for exploring the interplay between natural forms, shadows and patterns. She focuses on expressing ideas through design and finding the relationship between realism and abstract principles, by studying trees and plants-- which have always been her source of inspiration. She creates drawings and paintings as poetic rather than literal depictions of my subject matter.

Skafte's background in textile design and studio art has provided a rich foundation for her artistic pursuits. She earned a BFA  from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago in textile design, and MA/MFA is from Syracuse University in fibers and studio art. Her early career was as a textile designer in New York, then as a product designer. After earning an MFA, she turned to teaching and became a full time painter.

She retired from college level teaching at James Madison University and community colleges in Virginia, and now teaches art at private schools and drawing and painting to adult students out of her downtown Charlottesville studio.

She has had solo exhibitions throughout Virginia, and group exhibitions along the east coast, New York, California and elsewhere.
